What exactly is Chão do Rio?

The seven comfortable cottages are built of granite and slate—a construction technique that has been used for centuries in the Serra da Estrela region and now symbolizes the property’s sustainable identity. They are arranged around an organic swimming pool whose shape and appearance evoke the iconic glacial lagoons of the Serra da Estrela .

Behind all of this lies a passionate story: Rodolfo and Catarina discovered Travancinha as a couple and immediately fell in love with the place. Here, they built Chão do Rio from the ground up, and have made it a point ever since to actively involve the local community: villagers make up the team that welcomes guests.

A pioneer in sustainable tourism

At Chão do Rio, sustainability is not an afterthought. It is the foundation of the entire business. In 2018, the property became the first rural tourism business in Portugal to receive Biosphere Responsible Tourism certification, an internationally recognized certification accredited by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council.

• All heating comes from wood-burning stoves, fueled by wood from our own forest plantations and forest management efforts
• The 8-hectare farm has an active biodiversity policy
• Breakfast consists of regional products: local cheeses, honey, and bread from the local bakery (delivered fresh every afternoon at 5 p.m.)
• Bicycles are available free of charge for guests to explore the village and the surrounding area
• Following the devastating wildfires of October 2017, Chão do Rio launched the “Forest of the Future” project: reforestation of the affected portion of the estate with native trees
• They have their own vegetable garden, and the vegetables from it are used in the kitchen

Hiking from Chão do Rio

Its location at the foot of the Serra da Estrela makes Chão do Rio an ideal base for hiking. The Serra da Estrela Nature Reserve, Portugal’s largest protected nature reserve, is just 12 kilometers away. Upon request, you can go on a (free) hike with local guides.

On the grounds of Chão do Rio is the Sendeiro da Moira has been created: a marked hiking trail that invites you to connect with nature, the flora of the Serra, and the historic stone structures of the village of Travancinha.

Entre Serras: The Panoramic Swing

Within walking distance of Chão do Rio is the Entre Serras swing, a unique scenic spot built by local volunteers on a pro bono basis. The name refers to its special location: at the intersection of seven mountain ranges, including the Serra da Estrela, Serra do Caramulo, Serra do Montemuro, Serra da Lousã, and Serra do Açor. It is one of the most photogenic viewpoints in Central Portugal.

Accommodations: The Seven Stone Cottages

Chão do Rio’s seven guesthouses are each built in the traditional architectural style of the Serra da Estrela: thick granite walls that keep the interiors cool in the summer and retain heat in the winter. Each cottage features a wood-burning stove (fueled with wood from the property’s own forest), air conditioning, a kitchenette, and Wi-Fi. The cottages are each decorated in a different color scheme and can accommodate 1–8 people.

Every day, a basket of regional breakfast items delivered to your door—or actually, as early as 5 p.m. the day before, with warm, fresh bread from the local bakery, local cheeses, honey, and artisanal spreads. Try leaving that out until the next morning…There’s no restaurant, but meals can be delivered.

Practical Information

Chão do Rio can only be reached by car or motorcycle. Take the A23 or A25 toward Seia, then follow the local roads toward Travancinha.
