Day-to-day hiking adventure: the other side of the Douro Valley

Day 1: Arrival in Porto

Your trip gets off to a relaxing start: a driver will be waiting for you at the Porto airport and will take you to your hotel in the charming city center. There, you’ll receive your personalized welcome package with directions, tips, and all the information you’ll need for the week. Still have some energy left? Then consider a food or cultural tour of this colorful city full of azulejos, markets, and scenic viewpoints.

Day 2: To the Heart of the Douro: By Train or Boat

Today you’ll leave the city and head for the tranquility of the Douro Valley. You have a choice: take the train along the river, or travel by boat through the impressive landscape and past the locks toward Peso da Régua. Both are an adventure in their own right. Upon arrival, you can visit a local winery or the Douro Museum.

You’ll be staying at a boutique hotel by the river, with breakfast included. It’s a wonderful base for your upcoming hikes.

Day 3: From Peso da Régua to Aldeia de Baixo

Distance 15.9 km | +706 m -226 m

After leaving the bustling town behind, you’ll soon find yourself immersed in silence. You’ll walk past terraced vineyards and through small villages where daily life still follows its own pace. Enjoy the rhythm of nature and get to know the locals at a café. The route winds through orchards of apples, cherries, and figs. In the spring, the area is a sea of flowers. You’ll spend the night in a charming country house with a view of the valley.

Discover the Douro Valley with All Your Senses

The best way to explore the area is on foot. The centuries-old trails through vineyards and olive groves make this experience unique: you’ll pass through places where nature remains unspoiled, and the villages along the route give you the feeling that time moves more slowly. Day 4: From Salzedas to Aldeia de Baixo

Distance 14.6 km | +348 m -322 m

After a short transfer, you’ll start the day in historic Salzedas, home to the impressive 12th-century Cistercian monastery. This is followed by a walking route full of color and scent: blossoms, olive trees, wildflowers, and orchards alternate along the way. In the distance, you can see the mountains of the Alvão Nature Park. This day feels like an ode to the Portuguese countryside.

Day 5: From Armamar to Quinta do Tedo

Distance 14.2 km | +356 m -814 m

After a short drive to Armamar, a beautiful descent begins through a landscape dotted with olive groves, orchards, and small-scale vineyards. Along the way, you’ll enjoy views of the river and the famous terraces of the Douro. The hike ends with an extensive wine tasting at Quinta do Tedo. Afterward, a shuttle will take you to the tranquil village of Tabuaço, where you’ll stay at a stylish guesthouse.

Day 6: Tabuaço Loop Hike via Adorigo

Distance 17.1 km | +433 m -447 m

Today you’ll take a varied loop hike through hilly terrain featuring rock formations, wine-growing villages, and sweeping views. You’ll pass through the village of Barcos, one of the region’s six official wine-producing villages. Here, you’ll see how small-scale farmers grow their grapes, vegetables, and fruit. It’s a peaceful route through the countryside with beautiful views. Along the way, you can also visit a family-run winery that’s over 100 years old.

Day 7: From Valença do Douro to Pinhão

Distance 15.4 km | +325 m -635 m

After a transfer to Valença do Douro, you’ll walk past small vineyards and along the famous Quinta das Carvalhas estate. This is the landscape of small-scale winegrowers, with an impressive pattern of grapevines. The descent toward Pinhão offers a succession of spectacular views. Along the way, you’ll taste port at Real Companhia Velha, one of Portugal’s oldest port houses. Overnight stay in a comfortable hotel by the river.

Day 8: From Vilarinho de Cotas to Pinhão

Distance 8.9 km | +131 m -484 m

You’ll wrap up the week with a leisurely descent from the northern hills of the Douro. As you stroll among the vineyards of famous quintas like Roêda and Bomfim, a panoramic view of the valley unfolds before you. In Pinhão, you’ll take the train back to Porto. It’s a wonderful way to reflect on an unforgettable week filled with nature, culture, wine, and the joy of hiking.
