Vitoria-Gasteiz, the authentic and green capital of the Basque Country
Vitoria-Gasteiz may not be the first place that comes to mind when you think of the Basque Country in northern Spain. But this green city, full of charm, history, and pintxos, surprised me in every way.
I visited Vitoria-Gasteiz, the somewhat lesser-known capital of the Spanish Basque Country, in June. San Sebastián and Bilbao are the better-known cities in this region, but the “green capital” is relatively unknown. And what a surprise. The city isn’t a tourist magnet, but that’s precisely what makes it so authentic. It’s a place where nature, culture, and gastronomy come together in perfect harmony.
Green and Authentic Vitoria-Gasteiz
The landscape is both hilly and expansive. And, because it rains regularly here, it’s green—very green. I had beautiful weather in June, by the way. The locals speak both Spanish and Basque, and you’ll see both languages on the signs as well. Not many people speak English yet, but they’re friendly and helpful, so you can get by just fine with gestures and body language.
Casco Viejo & Medieval Charm
Vitoria’s charm lies in its blend of medieval tranquility and modern surprises. “Casco Viejo,” the old town, is situated on a hill and can be reached via… escalators! It’s quite remarkable to see modern architecture nestled among centuries-old stones.
A small section of the 11th-century city wall still stands. Within the walls lies the old town, “La Almendra Medieval” (the medieval almond). Here, the old and the new come together: the neighborhood is a maze of narrow streets and hidden squares.
One of the highlights is the Santa Maria Cathedral. You literally step back in time on the underground tour, which ends with a ride in the elevator to the rooftop terrace—offering panoramic views that are simply magical at sunset.
There’s a market at the Plaza de España every Sunday. It’s also a great place to shop, with lots of local shops and designers.
Museum Recommendations in Vitoria-Gasteiz
The Fine Arts Museum features Spanish—and especially Basque—art from the 18th to the 20th century. It is housed in a beautiful mansion.
Bibat: a two-in-one museum combining playing cards and archaeology.
Centro Cultural Montehermoso: a historic building featuring (temporary) modern exhibitions.
Hiking and Biking Along the Green Ring (Anillo Verde)
Vitoria-Gasteiz was named the European Green Capital in 2012—and rightly so. The city has a lot of green space. Even the convention center is covered in greenery.
In addition, the “Green Ring” encircles the city via walking and biking trails. It is a network of six Nature reserves, connected by biking and walking trails. The trails are mostly flat and marked with wooden posts bearing green dots. The entire network is about 30 km long.
I highly recommend visiting the Salburua Wetlands park and marshland area, east of the city. I cycled through it. The forests are full of oaks, beeches, and pines. You can also spot wild boars, birds of prey, and roe deer. For birdwatchers, there are observation huts. Don’t forget your binoculars! The route is 11 km long.
You can get here by bike from Vitoria-Gasteiz. You can explore the park on foot or by bike. If you don’t have a bike, take the tram, which stops near the park.
Tip: Rent an e-bike from Guiartu, run by Arturo Martinez—great service and easy to arrange. You can also take the tram to the starting point.
A Culinary Delight: Pintxos & Rioja
In the Basque Country, eating is a celebration. Start the evening with pintxos—small bites on baguette slices—served in small bars alongside local wines and cider. Ingredients like anchovies, squid ink, grilled meat, seafood, and creamy cheesecake are favorites.
Both in the afternoon and in the evening, locals gather together in a cozy atmosphere, enjoying a glass of Rioja wine. La Rioja, specifically the northern part known as Rioja Alavesa, borders the Basque Country. This lends a unique Basque character to the wine experience. Cider is also widely consumed there. It is an important cultural and culinary product. This (low-alcohol) beverage is made from apples.
Places to Have Lunch
Casa Vieja – right in the heart of Casco Viejo
La Casa del Patrón in Murgia
Klandestino in Vitoria-Gasteiz
Places to Dine
Saburdi
Sukalki
El Portalón (a chic restaurant in a medieval building)
Gorbeia Nature Park
Gorbeia Nature Park is the largest nature park in the Basque Country. It’s located about 20 km northwest of Vitoria. The easiest way to get there is by car. There are several hiking trails of varying lengths and difficulty levels.
I recommend Route 9 (5.82 km). It’s a beautiful, green wooded area with stunning views. Be sure to wear sturdy shoes—the trails can get a bit muddy. Tip: Wikilock—an app for hiking trails.
Day Trips from Vitoria-Gasteiz
Looking for authentic experiences? From Vitoria-Gasteiz, I took three wonderful day trips that were about a half-hour drive away.
Añana Salt Valley: Centuries-old salt mining, featuring wellness and tastings.
Valle Salando de Anana is an active salt-mining valley. It has existed for about 7,000 years. You can book a guided tour of the valley online. They also offer workshops and salt tastings. If you’re in the mood to relax, head to the wellness center to soak your feet and hands in the saltwater—it’s wonderful, and the view is beautiful. The salt harvested here is used by many Michelin-starred restaurants.
Note: There may not always be much salt on the road; it depends on the weather conditions. So if it has rained, there won’t be much salt visible.
Ollerias Pottery Studio: Learn pottery with Blanka Gómez, a true master of her craft.
Blanka Gómez de Segura is a leading ceramic artist from Álava and has been the director of the Museo de Alfareria Vasca in Ollerias since 1993.
In addition to visiting the museum, you can take a ceramics workshop or class. In her studio, Blanka is working on new pieces. You can also purchase them. Blanka explores clay materials, historical glazes, and decorative techniques; she revives old forms and reproduces archaeological pieces.
Fun fact: This is the only potter’s workshop still in operation in the Basque countryside, with centuries-old kilns.
Iruri Cheese Farm: Meet the sheep, taste homemade sheep’s cheese, and experience Basque farm life.
Cheese lovers will enjoy a visit to Iruri in Legutio. Maider and her husband work together on the farm. They have over 100 sheep.
Maider attended sheep farming school to learn the trade. Cheese-making begins with milking the sheep. Once the cheese is made, it is stored in the freezer for about two months. You can also buy cheese here. Many locals shop here, as do many restaurants. In addition to cheese, they also sell meat and honey.
Atmosphere and Events
What makes Vitoria-Gasteiz so special is its balance. You have peace and nature, but also culture and a vibrant atmosphere. The squares come alive in the evening, people greet you on the street, and you can still count the tourists on one hand. Here, you truly live among the locals.
Cultural festivals:
Jazz Festival: July 14–19, 2025
Fiestas de la Virgen Blanca: August 4–9, 2025
The name Vitoria-Gasteiz
Vitoria, also known as “Nueva Victoria,” was founded in 1181 on the site of an older settlement called Gasteiz. Gasteiz was a small, medieval Basque village. It was located on the hill where the old town,“Casco Viejo,” now stands.
Today, Vitoria-Gasteiz is the official name, reflecting its dual cultural and historical heritage. Spanish speakers often use the name Vitoria, while Basque speakers use the name Gasteiz.
Vitoria-Gasteiz, Sustainable Public Transportation
Public transportation in Vitoria-Gasteiz is well organized. It is focused on sustainability and accessibility. The trams are fully electric, as are most of the buses. They produce no direct emissions and are very quiet.
You can take the bus to travel to surrounding areas. You can buy a single-ride ticket or a BAT Card. This is a type of discounted public transit pass for the whole family (up to 10 people); you can recharge it at vending machines. The pass can be used until the balance runs out and is valid for both trams and buses.
Green Cities tip: There is a train connection between San Sebastián and Vitoria-Gasteiz.
Public transportation in Vitoria-Gasteiz is fully electric: trams and buses are emission-free.
How do you get to Vitoria-Gasteiz?
From the Netherlands, it’s about 1,380 km to Vitoria-Gasteiz. You can also fly to Bilbao. From Bilbao, you can reach the heart of Vitoria-Gasteiz (Álava province) in an hour. There’s also a bus service from Bilbao. Soon, you’ll be able to travel there by train as well, thanks to a new rail line.
Where to Stay – Tip: Hotel Nirea
A centrally located hotel with spacious, bright rooms and nice bathrooms. Welcoming and friendly. Every morning, you can enjoy breakfast at the café next to the hotel—a smart and comfortable way to start the day.

Last September, we had a wonderful six-day hiking vacation from Bologna to Florence (Via Degli Dei). Not only was the weather perfect, but the organization also contributed to this wonderful experience. The hotels were good, and our luggage was always delivered to the hotel before we arrived. The private transfer was on time, and communication via WhatsApp during our hiking week went smoothly as well; responses were quick and clear. We can therefore definitely recommend this hiking vacation through Nature Travel Lab!
After reading the report on the “Alpenüberquerung,” we got really excited. The combination of hiking through beautiful nature and the luxury of luggage transport and a reserved hotel perfectly meets our desire to stay active but then be able to enjoy a well-deserved drink and a delicious meal. The hikes were manageable for us and very varied; some basic fitness is required, especially since we aren’t used to the elevation gain. The trip really gives you the feeling that you’re on a hiking expedition, especially since you hike on your own but meet the same fellow hikers in the afternoons and evenings at one of the mountain huts or at the hotel. Highly recommended for hikers who love unspoiled nature combined with the luxury of a hotel!
Peloponnese Hiking Tour
A really beautiful six-day hike from Bologna to Florence. Communication with NatureTravelLab and the local agent was excellent. The information packet was waiting for us at the hotel in Bologna, and the app with the route worked great. Luggage transport was well organized every day, and our bags were waiting for us each time we arrived at our new room! We covered more than 1,400 meters of elevation gain, but unfortunately didn’t always get the views we’d hoped for due to cloud cover and some drizzle. Most days had great hiking weather. It was wonderful to walk into Florence on foot and stay there an extra day.
We experienced the Walk of the Gods as a great adventure. Our start in Bologna didn’t go quite as planned because our app wasn’t working yet and we couldn’t find a single sign for Via degli Dei in the square. Fortunately, we were quickly able to join two young hikers from Florence who were also doing the hike. After a wonderful night’s stay at the beautiful Rio Verde agritourism farm, Day 2 went much better with the help of the hiking app. Along the way, we enjoyed stunning views, met some great fellow hikers, and sampled delicious local dishes. Unfortunately, the weather wasn’t always on our side, and we had a day of heavy rain, which made the trail very slippery and required us to be careful. It’s a real treat when, on the last day, you can already see Florence in the distance and walk into this beautiful city a few hours later. Thank you so much for your quick and friendly responses to all our questions.
We enjoyed the trip. We also made some changes to our itinerary, and the email correspondence went very smoothly. We started in Mantera; the next day, our first and only hike was a really beautiful one. The taxi picked us up right on time. Unfortunately, the second day’s route was almost the same when we cycled to Ostuni. The bikes were well-maintained, including panniers and helmets (these were simply included). You could even bring your own water bottle!!! We found the route very scenic and varied. There were charming little villages where we could stop for lunch or coffee. The app worked great. All the hotels ranged from good to excellent, though we didn’t think the hotel in Leuca was worthy of 4 stars. We followed your advice for the two nights we stayed there. We found Leuca a bit underwhelming for a two-day stay. We would have preferred to stay in Gallipoli or Lecce for two days. We took this trip in April and were very lucky with the weather. It’s still a quiet time of year, but we didn’t mind that. We definitely recommend it!!!
Thanks to a great tip from Nature Travel Lab, we had a wonderful week in Italy. Fattoria di Maiano, just outside Florence, was a beautiful and peaceful place. And the suggested road trips were a great guide for exploring the region. We’ll definitely check here for tips for our next vacation, too. Highly recommended!
We spent a divine week in Italy: we walked the Path of the Gods, from Bologna to Florence—about 135 km spread over 6 days of hiking. Challenging distances and climbs, amazing views, nature, and a warm welcome every time we arrived at the agriturismo or albergo/hotel. All of this was perfectly organized by the Italian company Slow Active Tours, entirely in line with Nature Travel Lab’s itinerary proposal: upon arrival in Bologna, an information packet was waiting for us, complete with a hiking map, a booklet, and passports for the stamps. And the hiking app was very practical for along the way! Our luggage was transported every day and was always waiting for us when we arrived at the next location. Communication was smooth and clear. In short, highly recommended, well worth it, and well-organized.
In September, I walked the Cammino Materano. Communicating with Madelon about the booking was a pleasure. To be honest, I was quite nervous because it was my first time doing a multi-day hike—alone and in a region I wasn’t familiar with—but I thoroughly enjoyed it. The hike to Matera was beautiful, and I was able to complete it without any trouble thanks to the clear on-site signage and the routing and advice provided by the GPS app. The rest of the organization was top-notch as well. My luggage always arrived on time at the right destination, and the hotels and B&Bs were of high quality. In addition, the organizers were easy to reach via WhatsApp if I had any questions. Highly recommended!
Slovenia was absolutely amazing. A beautiful country, friendly people, lovely hiking trails, and truly top-notch hotels. The staff at the local organization were also very easy to reach and helpful. The hiking was manageable. As Dutch people, we’re not used to high altitudes, of course, so it was pretty tough at times. But it was also a lot of fun.
We had a wonderful trip. Everything was well organized. Due to an unfortunate fall, I ended up traveling with my luggage for a day, but that was handled well, too. We really liked all the accommodations. Only the Hotel Hebe in St. Piero a Sieve was a little less impressive, but it was still okay.
Looks fantastic! I'm definitely going to book a trip with this company... they're committed to sustainability and personalized advice. Definitely worth it.
Madelon and her team are true experts. Thanks to their years of experience and passion for travel, they manage to surprise us time and time again.
