Ojos Negros Cycling Route: 8 Days Along Spain’s Longest Greenway to Valencia

Ojos Negros: A Beautiful Bicycle Route Along the Greenway to Valencia

Are you looking for a cycling trip that feels like one long succession of silence, open spaces, and “how beautiful is this?”—without heavy traffic every day? Then the Vía Verde Ojos Negros is a wonderful choice. You’ll cycle along the route of an old railroad line (meaning plenty of gentle inclines, a smooth ride, and impressive tunnels and viaducts), and in a single trip, you’ll cross three Spanish provinces: Teruel, Castellón, and Valencia.

You can easily plan this route on your own (with GPX and smart logistics), but you can also book an organized tour through our local partner, which includes accommodations, luggage transport, and 24/7 support. At the bottom of this article, you’ll find the request for a quote.

Why the Valencia Greenway is such a great combination (mountains and the sea)

Ojos Negros isn’t just a “from A to B” route. It’s a journey where you truly see the landscape change. From the medieval charm of Albarracín to the UNESCO-worthy Mudéjar architecture in Teruel. You’ll cycle through the Sierra de Javalambre and past railway heritage sites (bridges, viaducts, and tunnels). You’ll cycle through picturesque villages and nature parks (Sierra Espadán and Sierra Calderona) until you suddenly catch a whiff of the Mediterranean Sea at Canet d’en Berenguer. You’ll end with a natural finale in Albufera: rice paddies, a lagoon, and sunsets.

Highlights of Ojos Negros

  • Spain’s longest greenway (Vía Verde Ojos Negros)
  • Teruel: Mudéjar Art (UNESCO) + The Story of Los Amantes de Teruel
  • Valencia: Historic Center + City of Arts and Sciences
  • Canet d’en Berenguer: beach and promenade on the Mediterranean Sea
  • El Salto de la Novia (waterfall, approx. 60 m) near Navajas

  • Truffle region around Sarrión/Albentosa (black truffle)
  • Astrotourism: Starry Skies Thanks to Low Light Pollution

Day-by-day itinerary (8 days)

Day 1: Arrival in Valencia & on to Albarracín

Start off at a leisurely pace in Albarracín, one of Spain’s most beautiful villages: walled, medieval, and perfect for getting into the spirit of things.

Overnight Stay (example): Hotel Albarracín

Day 2 (Stage 1): From Albarracín to Teruel

You’ll cycle along quiet roads through Los Pinares de Rodeno (viewpoints, rock carvings) and follow the Guadalaviar and Turia rivers toward Teruel. There, you’ll immerse yourself in the culture: the Escalinata Neomudéjar, the Torre del Salvador, the Plaza del Tórico, the Catedral de Santa María de Mediavilla, the Puente de Piedra, and the Portal de San Roque. And, if you’re lucky, truffles will be on the menu.

Overnight stay (example): Hotel Civera (3*) with breakfast

Day 3 (Stage 2): From Teruel to Estación Mora

Through the Fuente Cerrada recreational area, you’ll climb to Puerto de Escandón and cross the Sierra Javalambre. Then come the iconic sections of the railroad: stone bridges, viaducts, and tunnels heading toward Mora. This is also the region with one of the largest black truffle productions. In the evening, this is the perfect spot for stargazing.

Accommodation (example): La Casa de la Estación (Casa Rural)

Day 4 (Stage 3): from Estación Mora to Segorbe

Much of today’s route is a gradual descent. You’ll pass through the Albentosa Tunnel and cross the greenway’s highest viaduct, among other sights. Via El Palancar, you’ll enter Castellón and cycle past villages such as Barracas, Caudiel, Jérica, and Navajas. Be sure to make time for El Salto de la Novia and the famous elm tree in the village square. Then continue through the Sierra Calderona Nature Park to Segorbe.

Overnight Stay (example): Hotel María de Luna

Day 5 (Stage 4): from Segorbe to Canet d’en Berenguer / Puerto de Sagunto

Through inland villages (including Algimia de Alfara, Torres-Torres, and Los Valles) nestled among orange groves and the landscape of a nature park. Reaching the sea here is truly a special moment: the Mediterranean Sea as a reward.

Overnight stay (example): Hotel Barú or Hotel Exe Puerto de Sagunto

Day 6 (Stage 5): from Canet/Puerto de Sagunto to Valencia

Via the Vía Churra and Vía Augusta, you’ll cycle along the coast and through the Valencian “huerta.” In Valencia, you can visit classic sights such as the Cathedral, the Tribunal de las Aguas, La Lonja, the Central Market, the Torres de Serranos, and the modern highlights at the City of Arts and Sciences. Also worth a visit: Turia Park (the old riverbed).

Overnight Stay (example): Hotel Silken Puerta de Valencia

Day 7 (Stage 6): from Valencia to Albufera to Valencia

Today is all about nature: Albufera Natural Park (approximately 223 km² of rice fields, forests, and a lagoon). Go for a walk or bike ride through El Saler and time your visit for sunset; it’s one you’ll never forget.

Overnight stay: Valencia

Day 8: Departure from Valencia (or extend your stay)

Valencia is the perfect place to spend a few extra days (beach, museums, food).
