Itinerary for a Train Trip to Piedmont

Days 1 & 2: Train trip to Milan

During the day, you’ll travel by international train through Germany and Switzerland to Milan. There, you’ll spend one night in a comfortable 3-star hotel within walking distance of the central station. The next morning, you’ll have time to explore Milan. Visit the iconic Duomo, stroll through the charming Brera district, and enjoy an espresso on a sunny terrace.

In the afternoon, you’ll pick up your rental electric car, a brand-new Citroën E-C3 with a range of 350 km. Then you’ll head toward Piedmont, where the adventure continues.

Days 2–6: Langhe, the heart of Piedmontese wine culture

The Langhe is often compared to Tuscany, but it’s much quieter. Here, you can taste top-quality wines and enjoy peace and nature. Discover the rolling vineyards of the famous Barolo and Barbaresco regions. Be sure to visit the medieval town of Alba, famous for its white truffles.

Ada Nada Agriturismo, an authentic winery with a swimming pool

You’ll stay for 4 nights at Agriturismo Ada Nada, an authentic winery with a swimming pool and panoramic views. Located in Treiso, surrounded by the vineyards of the Alba hills, this beautiful agriturismo has been run by the Nada family for four generations. Here, you’ll have a charming room with a bathroom and a view of the Langhe.

For foodies, the Nada family offers wine tastings and samplings of delicious local delicacies. Discover the refined flavors of Barbaresco, Barbera d’Alba, Dolcetto d’Alba, and Moscato d’Asti. Every morning, a generous and delicious buffet is served (outdoors on the terrace when the weather permits). It features a selection of local cold cuts and cheeses, savory pies, eggs, various sweets, local specialties, coffee, milk, tea, fresh juices, jam, and fresh fruit.

After a day of sightseeing, relax in the communal garden and enjoy the beautiful pool. The agriturismo’s wine cellar is open to visitors by appointment. Of course, you can also spend a day exploring bustling Turin.

Your stay in the Langhe includes a wine tasting at the historic cellars of Cantine Coppo in Canelli, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here, you’ll learn about the history and production techniques of Coppo wines, followed by a tasting of four wines from the “classic line.”

You can also go truffle hunting with a local truffle hunter and his dog. In Monferrato, you’ll discover the authentic flavors of Piedmont, from fragrant white truffles to velvety Barbera wines. In Casale Monferrato, you can sample local cheeses and artisanal wines. Be sure to also visit the beautiful city of Asti.

Cascina Faletta, a cozy B&B with a gourmet restaurant

You’ll be staying at Cascina Faletta for the next 4 nights—a historic estate with modern amenities and a gourmet restaurant. It’s located just outside Casale Monferrato, a fascinating destination that combines history, culture, and culinary traditions.

Day 10: Train trip back to the Netherlands from Milan Malpensa

On Day 10, you’ll head back toward Milan early in the morning, but fortunately, this time you won’t have to deal with the hustle and bustle of the city center: you can return the car at Milan Malpensa (about a 1-hour drive). After returning the car to the local rental agency, you’ll hop right back on the train.

On the way back, you’ll take the same train journey in the opposite direction, traveling during the day (departing around 10 a.m. from Malpensa) with a transfer in Basel or Zurich, continuing on to the Netherlands, where you’ll arrive (depending on where you live) on the same day. A relaxing conclusion to an unforgettable, indulgent, and sustainable trip.

Note: It is also possible (subject to availability and for an additional fee) to travel by overnight train from the Netherlands on the evening of Day 1. You’ll then have a transfer in Zurich or Basel in the early morning of Day 2 and arrive in Milan around lunchtime. In this case, you won’t stay at the hotel in Milan; instead, you’ll pick up your electric car right away and drive to Piedmont.
