Sustainable Accommodations in Europe: How to Identify and Find Truly Sustainable Places to Stay
Sustainable lodging means staying at a property that demonstrably uses energy, water, and raw materials efficiently, sources supplies locally, treats its staff fairly, and protects the local natural environment and culture. The difference from a regular hotel isn’t a lack of comfort, but rather choices that you, as a guest, often don’t see. A certification or an independent audit makes those choices verifiable.
Why choose Nature Travel Lab?
Nature Travel Lab features over 100 sustainable accommodations in 8 European countries, from Norway to Sicily.
About one in five applications does not meet the requirements and is rejected.
Profiles are reviewed and updated at least once a year.
Almost all of them are small-scale accommodations: eco-lodges, family-run B&Bs, agriturismos, and nature hotels.

How can you tell if a place to stay is sustainable?
A sustainable accommodation can demonstrate exactly what it does. Vague terms like “green” or “eco” don’t mean much; measures, figures, and certifications do. Keep these five points in mind:
Energy. Electricity from the sun, wind, or water; a heat pump; good insulation. Ask whether the energy is purchased from green sources or generated on-site.
Water and Waste.
Food and Purchasing. Seasonal, locally sourced produce, our own vegetable garden, vegetarian options, and fair trade for items sourced from farther away. Learn more about organic and locally sourced cuisine.
People.
Nature and the Environment.
We also look for small-scale operations and character: eco-lodges, (family-run) B&Bs, and nature retreats with a compelling story. Two signs of greenwashing: using CO₂ offsetting as the sole sustainability claim, and implementing a single visible measure (no plastic straws) without further explanation. An honest business also admits what it hasn’t been able to achieve yet.
What certification programs are available for sustainable lodging?
In Europe, there are six names that come up most often. The GSTC does not issue its own certification mark, but rather establishes the global standard and recognizes certification marks that meet it.
Certification Mark

Where you’ll find it

Note: The absence of a certification label does not automatically mean a property is not sustainable. For small family-owned businesses, certification is often too expensive; that is why Nature Travel Lab also evaluates properties without a label. To learn exactly what an ecohotel is and how it differs from an ecolodge or biohotel, read Ecohotel.
Here’s how Nature Travel Lab selects sustainable accommodations
Of all the accommodations that apply, about 20 percent are rejected. The selection now includes more than 100 locations. Each accommodation goes through the same steps:
Registration. De eigenaar antwoordt vragen over energie, water, afval, inkoop, personeel en omgeving.
Evidence.
Assessment. The property is evaluated based on the GSTC criteria from our own list. The threshold is at least 2 criteria.
Icons.
Annual inspection. Profiles are updated at least once a year. Anyone who no longer meets the criteria is removed from the site.
The most common reasons for rejection: too large in scale and compensation only.
Six categories: What are the strengths of a lodging option?

Sustainable Construction (Architecture)
Local and natural materials, preservation of heritage
At The Nest by Cooking & Nature Hotels in Alvados, Portugal, I noticed during my visit, for example, that the building is made entirely of wood, with natural temperature control, wellness and yoga facilities, a zero-waste policy in the kitchen, and no plastic.
How to Make an Impact with Your Booking
The biggest savings come from how you travel and where you book. Four steps:
Choose what matters most to you.
Book direct with the owner. With Nature Travel Lab, you book direct with the accommodation, without a booking platform in between. That way, more money stays in the region.
Travel by train whenever possible.
Stay a little longer.
Frequently Asked Questions About Sustainable Accommodations
What is sustainable lodging? Sustainable lodging means staying at a property that demonstrably conserves energy, water, and raw materials, sources supplies locally, treats its staff fairly, and protects the environment. It’s about the entire business operation, not just a single measure. A certification mark or independent audit makes these claims verifiable.
How can you tell if a hotel is sustainable? A sustainable hotel can demonstrate concrete actions it takes: green energy, water conservation, local sourcing, fair labor practices, and environmental stewardship. Look for a recognized certification such as Green Key, the EU Ecolabel, or Travelife, or for a program that evaluates properties itself. Vague terms like “eco” without further explanation are a red flag.
What sustainability certifications are available for accommodations in Europe? The best-known ones are Green Key, the EU Ecolabel, Travelife, and Biosphere. The Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) sets the international criteria and recognizes certification programs that meet them. Small family-run businesses often do not have a certification because it is expensive; that does not necessarily say anything about their commitment.
Is sustainable lodging more expensive? No, not necessarily. Many sustainable measures, such as solar panels and water conservation, actually lower costs. Price differences are more often due to small scale, location, and service than to sustainability. The Nature Travel Lab selection includes accommodations ranging from simple to luxurious, from 1- to 5-star categories.
Is sustainable lodging less luxurious? No. The sustainable choices are mainly made behind the scenes: in energy, procurement, and construction. In fact, many sustainable accommodations are boutique hotels or designer lodgings with saunas, excellent cuisine, and plenty of space.
How can you spot greenwashing at accommodations? You can spot greenwashing by grandiose claims without evidence. Signs include: claiming only CO₂ offsets, a single, eye-catching measure without further explanation, or a self-invented “eco” label. An honest accommodation lists specific measures and also explains what hasn’t worked yet.
Can I let you know about my dietary preferences? Yes. Select ” Food ” and check the listed options (vegetarian/vegan/gluten-free/lactose-free/detox).
What is the difference between an eco-hotel, an eco-lodge, and an agriturismo? An eco-hotel is a hotel that demonstrably uses energy, water, and raw materials efficiently in both its construction and day-to-day operations, and sources supplies locally. An ecolodge is usually smaller, located in the heart of nature, and built with natural or local materials. An agriturismo is a working farm in Italy where you stay overnight and eat food grown on the property; it isn’t automatically sustainable, but it is often small-scale and locally focused.
Where can you find sustainable accommodations in Europe? Nature Travel Lab offers a selection of over 100 sustainable accommodations in Europe, including in Italy, Portugal, Norway, Slovenia, Spain, and Finland. Each property has been assessed against the GSTC criteria and features icons that highlight its strengths. You book direct with the owner.
How does Nature Travel Lab determine whether an accommodation is sustainable? Each listing provides supporting documentation, such as certificates, photos, and ratings, and is evaluated against the GSTC criteria and a set of proprietary criteria. Approximately 20 percent of applications are rejected. Profiles are reviewed at least once a year.
Can you reach sustainable accommodations by train? Yes, some of the accommodations are located near a train station or are accessible by train and bus, such as the Oasi Eco Boutique Hotel in Levanto in the Cinque Terre. Some properties offer a discount for guests arriving by train. Be sure to ask about this when booking.
Does Nature Travel Lab engage in CO₂ offsetting? Nature Travel Lab focuses first on avoiding and reducing emissions. Offsetting is a supplementary measure, never the primary solution. Nature Travel Lab contributes financially to the Delta Plan for Biodiversity Restoration for nature restoration in the Netherlands.
Inspiration: What a Unique and Sustainable Stay Looks Like
Here are a few more examples from our selection.
Sagna Rotonda, Piedmont, Italy: a restored historic village on a mountain, built with local materials, featuring its own vegetable garden and serving local cuisine.
The Vagar, Central Portugal: mountain shelters and rooms in inland Portugal. Built with sustainable, eco-friendly materials, featuring a charging station, local products, and mindful nature experiences.
Drumlerhof in South Tyrol, Italy: Philosophy of the Economy for the Common Good, organic cuisine, products from the farm, biomass heating.
What is an eco-hotel?
Ecohotel is a general term for a hotel that is committed to sustainability.
Do you practice CO₂ offsetting? We focus on avoidance and reduction. Offsetting is supplementary and never the primary solution. We contribute (financially) to the Dutch Delta Plan for Biodiversity, thereby helping to restore nature in the Netherlands.

Last September, we had a wonderful six-day hiking vacation from Bologna to Florence (Via Degli Dei). Not only was the weather perfect, but the organization also contributed to this wonderful experience. The hotels were good, and our luggage was always delivered to the hotel before we arrived. The private transfer was on time, and communication via WhatsApp during our hiking week went smoothly as well; responses were quick and clear. We can therefore definitely recommend this hiking vacation through Nature Travel Lab!

After reading the report on the “Alpenüberquerung,” we got really excited. The combination of hiking through beautiful nature and the luxury of luggage transport and a reserved hotel perfectly meets our desire to stay active but then be able to enjoy a well-deserved drink and a delicious meal. The hikes were manageable for us and very varied; some basic fitness is required, especially since we aren’t used to the elevation gain. The trip really gives you the feeling that you’re on a hiking expedition, especially since you hike on your own but meet the same fellow hikers in the afternoons and evenings at one of the mountain huts or at the hotel. Highly recommended for hikers who love unspoiled nature combined with the luxury of a hotel!

A really beautiful six-day hike from Bologna to Florence. Communication with NatureTravelLab and the local agent was excellent. The information packet was waiting for us at the hotel in Bologna, and the app with the route worked great. Luggage transport was well organized every day, and our bags were waiting for us each time we arrived at our new room! We covered more than 1,400 meters of elevation gain, but unfortunately didn’t always get the views we’d hoped for due to cloud cover and some drizzle. Most days had great hiking weather. It was wonderful to walk into Florence on foot and stay there an extra day.

We experienced the Walk of the Gods as a great adventure. Our start in Bologna didn’t go quite as planned because our app wasn’t working yet and we couldn’t find a single sign for Via degli Dei in the square. Fortunately, we were quickly able to join two young hikers from Florence who were also doing the hike. After a wonderful night’s stay at the beautiful Rio Verde agritourism farm, Day 2 went much better with the help of the hiking app. Along the way, we enjoyed stunning views, met some great fellow hikers, and sampled delicious local dishes. Unfortunately, the weather wasn’t always on our side, and we had a day of heavy rain, which made the trail very slippery and required us to be careful. It’s a real treat when, on the last day, you can already see Florence in the distance and walk into this beautiful city a few hours later. Thank you so much for your quick and friendly responses to all our questions.

We enjoyed the trip. We also made some changes to our itinerary, and the email correspondence went very smoothly. We started in Mantera; the next day, our first and only hike was a really beautiful one. The taxi picked us up right on time. Unfortunately, the second day’s route was almost the same when we cycled to Ostuni. The bikes were well-maintained, including panniers and helmets (these were simply included). You could even bring your own water bottle!!! We found the route very scenic and varied. There were charming little villages where we could stop for lunch or coffee. The app worked great. All the hotels ranged from good to excellent, though we didn’t think the hotel in Leuca was worthy of 4 stars. We followed your advice for the two nights we stayed there. We found Leuca a bit underwhelming for a two-day stay. We would have preferred to stay in Gallipoli or Lecce for two days. We took this trip in April and were very lucky with the weather. It’s still a quiet time of year, but we didn’t mind that. We definitely recommend it!!!

We hadden liever in Gallipoli of in Lecce 2 dagen verbleven.

Thanks to a great tip from Nature Travel Lab, we had a wonderful week in Italy. Fattoria di Maiano, just outside Florence, was a beautiful and peaceful place. And the suggested road trips were a great guide for exploring the region. We’ll definitely check here for tips for our next vacation, too. Highly recommended!

We spent a divine week in Italy: we walked the Path of the Gods, from Bologna to Florence—about 135 km spread over 6 days of hiking. Challenging distances and climbs, amazing views, nature, and a warm welcome every time we arrived at the agriturismo or albergo/hotel. All of this was perfectly organized by the Italian company Slow Active Tours, entirely in line with Nature Travel Lab’s itinerary proposal: upon arrival in Bologna, an information packet was waiting for us, complete with a hiking map, a booklet, and passports for the stamps. And the hiking app was very practical for along the way! Our luggage was transported every day and was always waiting for us when we arrived at the next location. Communication was smooth and clear. In short, highly recommended, well worth it, and well-organized.

In September, I walked the Cammino Materano. Communicating with Madelon about the booking was a pleasure. To be honest, I was quite nervous because it was my first time doing a multi-day hike—alone and in a region I wasn’t familiar with—but I thoroughly enjoyed it. The hike to Matera was beautiful, and I was able to complete it without any trouble thanks to the clear on-site signage and the routing and advice provided by the GPS app. The rest of the organization was top-notch as well. My luggage always arrived on time at the right destination, and the hotels and B&Bs were of high quality. In addition, the organizers were easy to reach via WhatsApp if I had any questions. Highly recommended!

Dikke aanrader!

Slovenia was absolutely amazing. A beautiful country, friendly people, lovely hiking trails, and truly top-notch hotels. The staff at the local organization were also very easy to reach and helpful. The hiking was manageable. As Dutch people, we’re not used to high altitudes, of course, so it was pretty tough at times. But it was also a lot of fun.
Rated 5 out of 5
Slovenie was helemaal geweldig.

We had a wonderful trip. Everything was well organized. Due to an unfortunate fall, I ended up traveling with my luggage for a day, but that was handled well, too. We really liked all the accommodations. Only the Hotel Hebe in St. Piero a Sieve was a little less impressive, but it was still okay.
Rated 4.8 out of 5
Wij hadden een fijne reis. Alles prima geregeld. We vonden alle accommodaties heel fijn. Alleen hotel Hebe in st Piero a Sieve iets minder, maar wel oke.
