By Train to Ticino: Traveling to Southern Switzerland Without a Car
The best way to get to Ticino is to take your time getting there. First, Germany glides by the window; then the train climbs into the Alps; and suddenly (after a long tunnel), the rooftops are orange, there are palm trees on the platform, and you hear Italian. No rental car, no parking stress, no traffic jam at the Gotthard Pass.
I traveled by train from the Netherlands and used only public transportation once I arrived. It works just fine, and it’s more comfortable than it sounds. With the right app and pass, it’s not expensive either. Here’s how to do it.
Traveling to Ticino by Train: Your Options
There is no direct train from the Netherlands to Locarno or Lugano; you’ll always have to change trains at least once along the way. But the journey itself is an experience. Three ways:
During the day, take the ICE through Germany. From Amsterdam, Utrecht, or Arnhem, you can travel via Frankfurt to Basel (about 7 hours) or Zurich (about 7.5 hours), with at least one transfer in Germany. There, you’ll transfer to a train heading south via the Gotthard Pass; the total travel time to Locarno or Lugano is about nine to ten hours.
Overnight on the Nightjet. The ÖBB night train departs from Amsterdam in the evening (with stops in Utrecht and Arnhem) and arrives in Basel and Zurich in the morning. You can choose between a seat, a couchette, or a sleeper cabin; from there, you’ll transfer to the connecting train to Ticino. If you sleep on the way, you’ll save an entire day of travel.
The Panorama Route. If you have the time, take the Gotthard Panorama Express from Lucerne: first by boat across Lake Lucerne (also known as Lake of the Four Forests), then by panoramic train over the Gotthard Pass to Bellinzona and Lugano (approx. 5.5 hours, daily except Mondays, mid-April through mid-October). Seat reservations are required.
The easiest way to book is through NS International or Nightjet.com. An added bonus: the Swiss railways run largely on renewable energy, mainly hydropower.
When is the best time to book to get the best deal?
For international trains, the earlier you book, the cheaper it is. The cheapest tickets (the Supersparpreis Europa fare) are limited in number, sell out quickly, and go on sale about half a year to a year in advance.
So book as soon as you know your date—preferably online. That will save you booking fees.
Traveling on a weekday or in the evening is often cheaper; for a weekend trip, it’s better to choose Saturday, Sunday, and Monday rather than Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. For the Swiss portion of the trip, buy Supersaver tickets as soon as they appear in the SBB app, preferably during off-peak hours.
Our trip to Ticino without a car
On the way there, I boarded the train early in the morning in Amsterdam, with quite a few transfers. In Mannheim, I missed my connection due to a delay, but I was able to take the next train just half an hour later. At the station, I was able to rebook my reserved seats. And grab a quick cup of coffee.
Amsterdam
Duisburg
Mannheim
Basel
Locarno
Ascona by bus
On the way back, I had fewer transfers and traveled from Locarno to:
Bellinzona
Zurich
Frankfurt
Through the Gotthard: Faster Than You Think
Once you’re in Switzerland, Ticino is surprisingly close. The Gotthard Base Tunnel (at 57 kilometers, the longest rail tunnel in the world) takes you from Zurich to Lugano in about two hours. And since the Ceneri Base Tunnel opened in 2020, the trip between Locarno and Lugano takes just 22 minutes. Distances within the canton are therefore short; you don’t need a car to get from the lakes to the valleys. We explored the Valle Maggia by bike from Locarno and Intragna by the Centovalli train.
And the best part is: what’s true for Ticino is true for all of Switzerland. The same extensive SBB network, the same Swiss Travel Pass, and the same scenic trains will take you just as effortlessly to the Bernese Alps, Graubünden, or the lakes of Central Switzerland. As far as we’re concerned, Ticino is the perfect first stop on a longer train journey through Switzerland. If you transfer in Bellinzona instead of getting off, the rest of Switzerland is wide open to you.
The SBB app: your most important travel companion
One app takes care of virtually your entire trip within Switzerland:SBB Mobile. It’s a door-to-door trip planner that includes buses, boats, trams, and cable cars, allowing you to buy a single ticket for a trip involving multiple carriers. You can see real-time platform information and delays right away. A few things that make a difference:
Supersaver tickets: heavily discounted tickets (up to 70% off) for a specific train, especially during off-peak hours. You must purchase them in advance; they are valid only for that specific train.
Saver Day Pass: a day pass for unlimited travel, starting at about CHF 52 (or CHF 29 with a Half Fare Card). The price goes up as the day gets busier, so it pays to book early.
EasyRide: For spontaneous rides, check in when you leave and check out when you arrive; the app automatically calculates the best price. Handy if you don’t want to plan ahead.
Digital SwissPass: You can store your travel passes and discount cards in the app, so you don’t have to print them out.
Tip: On busy days, reserve a seat for long rides, especially if you have luggage.
Which pass is right for you?
This is often a source of confusion, because there are three different tickets, and they overlap to some extent:
Ticino Ticket
If you’re staying at a hotel, hostel, or campground in Ticino, you’ll receive the Ticino Ticket for free with your accommodation. It gives you unlimited travel on all public transportation in the canton, plus discounts on cable cars, boats, and attractions. It’s ideal if you’re based in Ticino. I had no trouble using it to get all the way into the valleys.
Swiss Travel Pass
A national pass: unlimited travel by train, bus, and boat for a set number of consecutive days (3, 4, 6, 8, or 15), free admission to over 500 museums, and discounts on most mountain tours. In 2026, it will start at around CHF 254 (3 days, 2nd class). It’s especially worth it if you’re traveling extensively throughout Switzerland or taking the scenic trains.
You also have the Swiss Travel Pass Flex , which lets you choose your own travel days within a month for travel by train, bus, and boat. Choose from 3, 4, 6, 8, or 15 travel days within a month.
Swiss Museum Pass
The pass that grants access to over 500 museums throughout Switzerland. And here’s where the misunderstanding lies: that museum access is already included in the Swiss Travel Pass (you automatically receive the Swiss Museum Pass with it). If you don’t travel much but mainly want to visit museums, you can also purchase the Swiss Museum Pass separately as an annual pass. So it’s not the Ticino Ticket that grants you access to the museums.
Do the math
Often, the smartest combination is the free Ticino Ticket for all your local trips, supplemented with individual Supersaver tickets for long-distance travel. For a trip that takes place mainly in Ticino, this is usually cheaper than a Swiss Travel Pass. If you’re traveling all over Switzerland, the Swiss Travel Pass becomes the better value. The SBB app helps you compare the options.
Practical Information on Traveling to Ticino by Train
Round trip (day)
ICE via Germany: Amsterdam/Utrecht/Arnhem – Frankfurt – Basel (approx. 7 hours) or Zurich (approx. 7.5 hours), at least 1 transfer; then via the Gotthard Pass to Ticino
Round trip (overnight)
Nightjet (ÖBB): departs Amsterdam in the evening, arrives in Basel/Zurich in the morning; seat, couchette, or sleeper cabin; transfer to Ticino
You might come across it: Swisstainable, Switzerland Tourism’s sustainability program, which now includes more than 2,200 tourism businesses. The idea is simple: to provide guidance amid the maze of sustainability labels. And the funny thing is: you’re already doing a lot of what it encourages on this trip anyway—traveling by train, using public transportation, staying a little longer, and booking direct.
If you want to choose your lodging thoughtfully, check out the official Swisstainable accommodation list by destination and level. Keep in mind that the “committed” (Level I) designation represents a commitment to becoming more sustainable, while “engaged” (Level II) and “leading” (Level III) signify a documented strategy and internationally recognized certifications. The higher the level, the stronger the evidence.
Frequently Asked Questions About Ticino Without a Car
Can you visit Ticino without a car?
Yes, that’s right. You travel by train to Ticino and use public transportation once you’re there; if you stay overnight, you’ll receive the free Ticino Ticket, which allows you to travel freely throughout the entire canton. Thanks to the base tunnels, the lakes and valleys are close together.
How long does the train trip from the Netherlands take?
During the day, the ICE will take you to Basel or Zurich in about seven hours, and to Locarno or Lugano in about nine to ten hours total, with at least one transfer. With the Nightjet, you travel at night and arrive well-rested; you’ll also transfer in Basel or Zurich.
Do you need a Swiss Travel Pass?
Not necessarily. For a trip that takes place mainly in Ticino, the free Ticino Ticket plus individual Supersaver tickets is often cheaper. If you’re traveling extensively throughout Switzerland or taking the scenic trains, the Swiss Travel Pass becomes a good option. Calculate the cost in the SBB app.
Do you really get free admission to about 500 museums?
Yes, through the Swiss Museum Pass. It gives you free admission to over 500 museums throughout Switzerland on your travel days and is automatically included with the Swiss Travel Pass. So it’s not the Ticino Ticket, but the Swiss (Travel/Museum) Pass that grants you that access.
What is the most scenic train route to Ticino?
The Gotthard Panorama Express, featuring a boat ride on Lake Lucerne and a panoramic train ride across the Gotthard Pass to Bellinzona and Lugano. It runs from mid-April to mid-October, except on Mondays, and seat reservations are required.

Last September, we had a wonderful six-day hiking vacation from Bologna to Florence (Via Degli Dei). Not only was the weather perfect, but the organization also contributed to this wonderful experience. The hotels were good, and our luggage was always delivered to the hotel before we arrived. The private transfer was on time, and communication via WhatsApp during our hiking week went smoothly as well; responses were quick and clear. We can therefore definitely recommend this hiking vacation through Nature Travel Lab!

After reading the report on the “Alpenüberquerung,” we got really excited. The combination of hiking through beautiful nature and the luxury of luggage transport and a reserved hotel perfectly meets our desire to stay active but then be able to enjoy a well-deserved drink and a delicious meal. The hikes were manageable for us and very varied; some basic fitness is required, especially since we aren’t used to the elevation gain. The trip really gives you the feeling that you’re on a hiking expedition, especially since you hike on your own but meet the same fellow hikers in the afternoons and evenings at one of the mountain huts or at the hotel. Highly recommended for hikers who love unspoiled nature combined with the luxury of a hotel!

A really beautiful six-day hike from Bologna to Florence. Communication with NatureTravelLab and the local agent was excellent. The information packet was waiting for us at the hotel in Bologna, and the app with the route worked great. Luggage transport was well organized every day, and our bags were waiting for us each time we arrived at our new room! We covered more than 1,400 meters of elevation gain, but unfortunately didn’t always get the views we’d hoped for due to cloud cover and some drizzle. Most days had great hiking weather. It was wonderful to walk into Florence on foot and stay there an extra day.

We experienced the Walk of the Gods as a great adventure. Our start in Bologna didn’t go quite as planned because our app wasn’t working yet and we couldn’t find a single sign for Via degli Dei in the square. Fortunately, we were quickly able to join two young hikers from Florence who were also doing the hike. After a wonderful night’s stay at the beautiful Rio Verde agritourism farm, Day 2 went much better with the help of the hiking app. Along the way, we enjoyed stunning views, met some great fellow hikers, and sampled delicious local dishes. Unfortunately, the weather wasn’t always on our side, and we had a day of heavy rain, which made the trail very slippery and required us to be careful. It’s a real treat when, on the last day, you can already see Florence in the distance and walk into this beautiful city a few hours later. Thank you so much for your quick and friendly responses to all our questions.

We enjoyed the trip. We also made some changes to our itinerary, and the email correspondence went very smoothly. We started in Mantera; the next day, our first and only hike was a really beautiful one. The taxi picked us up right on time. Unfortunately, the second day’s route was almost the same when we cycled to Ostuni. The bikes were well-maintained, including panniers and helmets (these were simply included). You could even bring your own water bottle!!! We found the route very scenic and varied. There were charming little villages where we could stop for lunch or coffee. The app worked great. All the hotels ranged from good to excellent, though we didn’t think the hotel in Leuca was worthy of 4 stars. We followed your advice for the two nights we stayed there. We found Leuca a bit underwhelming for a two-day stay. We would have preferred to stay in Gallipoli or Lecce for two days. We took this trip in April and were very lucky with the weather. It’s still a quiet time of year, but we didn’t mind that. We definitely recommend it!!!

We hadden liever in Gallipoli of in Lecce 2 dagen verbleven.

Thanks to a great tip from Nature Travel Lab, we had a wonderful week in Italy. Fattoria di Maiano, just outside Florence, was a beautiful and peaceful place. And the suggested road trips were a great guide for exploring the region. We’ll definitely check here for tips for our next vacation, too. Highly recommended!

We spent a divine week in Italy: we walked the Path of the Gods, from Bologna to Florence—about 135 km spread over 6 days of hiking. Challenging distances and climbs, amazing views, nature, and a warm welcome every time we arrived at the agriturismo or albergo/hotel. All of this was perfectly organized by the Italian company Slow Active Tours, entirely in line with Nature Travel Lab’s itinerary proposal: upon arrival in Bologna, an information packet was waiting for us, complete with a hiking map, a booklet, and passports for the stamps. And the hiking app was very practical for along the way! Our luggage was transported every day and was always waiting for us when we arrived at the next location. Communication was smooth and clear. In short, highly recommended, well worth it, and well-organized.

In September, I walked the Cammino Materano. Communicating with Madelon about the booking was a pleasure. To be honest, I was quite nervous because it was my first time doing a multi-day hike—alone and in a region I wasn’t familiar with—but I thoroughly enjoyed it. The hike to Matera was beautiful, and I was able to complete it without any trouble thanks to the clear on-site signage and the routing and advice provided by the GPS app. The rest of the organization was top-notch as well. My luggage always arrived on time at the right destination, and the hotels and B&Bs were of high quality. In addition, the organizers were easy to reach via WhatsApp if I had any questions. Highly recommended!

Dikke aanrader!

Slovenia was absolutely amazing. A beautiful country, friendly people, lovely hiking trails, and truly top-notch hotels. The staff at the local organization were also very easy to reach and helpful. The hiking was manageable. As Dutch people, we’re not used to high altitudes, of course, so it was pretty tough at times. But it was also a lot of fun.
Rated 5 out of 5
Slovenie was helemaal geweldig.

We had a wonderful trip. Everything was well organized. Due to an unfortunate fall, I ended up traveling with my luggage for a day, but that was handled well, too. We really liked all the accommodations. Only the Hotel Hebe in St. Piero a Sieve was a little less impressive, but it was still okay.
Rated 4.8 out of 5
Wij hadden een fijne reis. Alles prima geregeld. We vonden alle accommodaties heel fijn. Alleen hotel Hebe in st Piero a Sieve iets minder, maar wel oke.
