The Most Beautiful Villages in the Val d’Orcia in Tuscany

In addition to its breathtaking scenery, the Val d’Orcia is home to some of Tuscany’s most charming and authentic villages. Here, time seems to stand still, while the local cuisine, cheeses, and wines make the region a paradise for slow travelers.

1. Montalcino

A medieval gem. A must-see for wine lovers, but also a sight to behold as a town in its own right. Visit the Fortezza di Montalcino, built in 1361; your reward for the climb is a stunning view of the town and the Val d’Orcia (entrance from Enoteca La Fortezza). You can walk along the city walls, with a different breathtaking panorama on every side.

Tips for Montalcino

  • Tempio di Brunello: In the beautiful former Sant’Agostino monastery, you’ll find more information about the unique basic requirements for Montalcino wine production.
  • Bogatto Nature Reserve: just under 600 hectares of unspoiled nature on the outskirts of Montalcino. Diverse forests, Mediterranean vegetation, and many species of birds along the Merse River.
  • North of the town, you’ll find the park “Il Giardino delle Favole.”
  • About 10 kilometers from Montalcino, you’ll find the Abbazia di Sant’Antimo in Castelnuovo dell’Abate

2. San Quirico d’Orcia

Halfway between Montalcino and Pienza lies San Quirico d’Orcia, a charming borgo along the ancient pilgrimage route, the Via Romea. Stroll through the Renaissance gardens of Horti Leonini and discover the famous cypress trees along the Via Cassia. Nearby, you’ll find Bagno Vignoni, a village with thermal springs.

Tips for San Quirico d’Orcia

  • Visit the Cappella della Madonna di Vitaleta, the most photographed chapel in Tuscany.
  • On December 8, the annual olive oil festival takes place in the historic center of San Quirico d’Orcia. With live bands and tastings of Tuscan cuisine featuring delicious olive oil, it’s well worth a visit.
  • Forme nel Verde: International Sculpture Exhibition from July through October at Horti Leonini.
  • The “cypresses of San Quirico d’Orcia” are the famous cypresses along the Via Cassia (SR2), located northeast of the center of San Quirico d’Orcia.

The Cappella della Madonna di Vitaleta: the most photographed chapel in the UNESCO landscape of the Val d’Orcia, located on the road from San Quirico d’Orcia to Pienza (SP 146). See the photo at the top of this article. The chapel was built on the spot where the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared to a shepherdess.

The chapel’s current design was renovated in 1800 by Giuseppe Partini. It really is a fantastic spot for photography enthusiasts. Of course, you can also get there on foot. The most beautiful hiking and biking trail in Tuscany is right here.

3. Castiglione d’Orcia

This medieval village has a rich history and offers spectacular views of the valley. The Sala d’Arte San Giovanni museum displays beautiful paintings from the early Renaissance. From the historic center, you can enjoy a stunning panoramic view of the surrounding valley.

Tips for Castiglione d’Orcia

  • Palio del Boscaiolo: a lumberjack competition held on the third Sunday in October in the nearby village of Vivo d’Orcia.
  • Mushroom and Nut Festival, also in October, naturally accompanied by the most delicious dishes.

4. Bagni San Filippo

A small hamlet, part of Castiglione d’Orcia, with thermal springs that originate from an extinct volcano. The Fosso Bianco waterfall is a local attraction. People visit the area year-round to bathe in the soothing magnesium-rich spring.

Tip: It’s about 20 kilometers from Bagni San Filippo to Monte Amiata. This mountain is partly located in the Val d’Orcia. Click here for a road trip through Monte Amiata.

5. Monticchiello

An authentic borgo, part of the municipality of Pienza, with medieval city walls dating from the period of Sienese rule. Another unique feature is the“Teatro povero,”a social and cultural project in which local residents perform plays based on the village’s history in July.

6. Montepulciano

A stunning Renaissance town in the Val d’Orcia. It gets very crowded with tourists during the summer months. Of course, it’s famous for its delicious red wine, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. Just south of Montepulciano and within walking distance, you’ll find the “Temple” of San Biagio: a grand, impressive Renaissance-era church.

Tips for Montepulciano

  • Just outside Montepulciano lies the Lago di Montepulciano Nature Reserve, one of Italy’s most important wetlands, home to a rich variety of flora and fauna.
  • Combine your visit with a trip to nearby Chianciano Terme for thermal baths.
  • Torrita di Siena hosts art and folklore events.

7. Pienza

A beautiful town where Pope Pius II was born. In the15th century, he had the village renovated into the romantic Pienza it remains today—born from “a thought of love and a dream of beauty.” You can explore the town on foot and experience the Renaissance era as you stroll through the narrow alleys. Highlights include the Palazzo Piccolomini and the cathedral. From Pienza, you’ll also enjoy a spectacular view of Monte Amiata.

Restaurant Recommendation in Pienza: Osteria Sette di Vino

Tip: Pienza

Sant’Anna in Camprena. For me, one of the most beautiful places in Tuscany. A former monastery steeped in history and spirituality. In 1996, the monastery served as the setting for several key scenes in the movie *The English Patient*. Today, it’s an agriturismo offering a variety of activities, such as painting classes, concerts, and weddings.

8. Bagno Vignoni

Hot springs in a hamlet near San Quirico d’Orcia. Located near the Via Francigena, this has been a popular destination for pilgrims for centuries. The central square, Piazza delle Sorgenti, features a large hot spring pool. Swimming is no longer permitted in this pool, but you can swim in the nearby Parco Naturale dei Mulini.

Bagnovignoni

Tip: Organic Flowers in the Val d’Orcia

On the way from Bettolle to Montepulciano along the SS146, you’ll find Azienda Agricola Puscina Flowers in Montefollonico, Torrita di Siena. It’s the first flower farm in Tuscany to use sustainable cultivation methods. Here, you can participate in various workshops, including a guided tour, flower picking, and, to wrap things up, an aperitivo featuring local products.

Natural Wonders: Hot Springs and Hiking Trails

Val d’Orcia is also known for its thermal springs. Bagno Vignoni and Bagni San Filippo are perfect places to relax in warm water while enjoying the surrounding landscape. For active travelers, there are countless hiking and biking trails, such as the pilgrimage route Via Francigena and the trails around Monte Amiata.

Practical Tips for the Val d’Orcia

  • Best time to visit: Spring (April–June) and fall (September–October) are ideal because of the mild weather and the peaceful atmosphere.
  • Transportation: A car is a good way to explore the region. Alternatively, explore the area by bike or e-bike.
