5 Dark Sky Sites in Europe

5 Dark Sky Sites in Europe: From the Wadden Sea Coast to the Alentejo

  • Best months: September through November and February through April (long, clear nights)
  • Where is it truly dark? Terschelling (NL), Lauwersmeer (NL), Alqueva (PT), Ainos (GR), Exmoor (UK)
  • Getting around without a car? Yes: train/bus and a last-mile transfer or rental bike
  • What should you bring? A red-light lamp, a thermos, layers of clothing, a tripod, and binoculars
  • Dark Sky photo settings: 10–20s, f/2.0–2.8, ISO 1600–3200 (test and adjust)
  • Respect for nature and the night: No flash photography or drones; speak in a whisper; stay on the trails.

Tip: Plan for at least a two-day stay. In coastal and mountainous areas, the clouds can clear up quickly.

Dark Sky on the Map

1) Wadden Sea Coast of Groningen & Friesland: Dark by the Sea (NL)

Why You’ll Want to Come Here

From the sky to the horizon: nowhere else is the starry sky so clear above the salt marshes and dikes. In addition to the Boschplaat on Terschelling, Lauwersmeer National Park is also a Dark Sky area.

Combine it with the magic of daylight: mudflat walking, migratory birds, endless dikes.

Easy to reach: multiple public transportation entrances and quiet villages.

What should I do?

A nighttime walk along the dike, or to one of the lookout points in or around Lauwersmeer National Park.

During the day, the Ziltepad or short salt marsh trails.

Public Transportation: On/Off

By train to Leeuwarden/Groningen and by bus towards Lauwersoog / Anjum / Zoutkamp ; the last part on foot/by bike.

Book direct

Small-scale B&Bs and nature campsites on the mainland; choose hosts who respect a quiet night’s sleep.

2) Twente: Star Cube & Silence (NL)

Why You’ll Want to Come Here

Accessible stargazing: from your star cube through the skylight. It’s not an official dark sky area, but there’s very little light pollution, so the starry sky is clear.

Dark countryside skies: little light pollution outside the villages. At the Cosmos Observatory in Lattrop, they offer various activities related to stargazing and the universe.

A leisurely weekend: hiking and biking through ash groves and hedgerows.

What should I do?

An evening stroll under red light; from your bed, you can see the dark sky inside the cube.

During the day, explore several estate tours, castles, and farmers’ markets.

Public Transportation: On/Off

Take the train to Oldenzaal or Enschede, then the bus to Lattrop; cover the last kilometer by taxi or rental bike.

Book direct

Stay directly with a farmer or at a small-scale B&B; ask about their lighting policy (are the outdoor lights turned off?).

3) Alentejo: Dark Sky Alqueva (Portugal)

Why You’ll Want to Come Here

Warm and clear climate: nights are often stable in the early and late seasons.

Nature and culture: the white village of Monsaraz, olive groves, and Lake Alqueva.

What should I do?

Guided stargazing session or self-guided tour at designated spots.

During the day, you can hike through montado landscapes or paddle on the lake.

Public Transportation: On/Off

Take a train or bus from Lisbon to Évora/Reguengos; from there, arrange a short transfer with your accommodation.

Book direct

Perfect for a combination trip: hiking during the day, stargazing at night.

What should I do?

Choose a coastal leg (e.g., Porlock–Lynmouth); stargazing on a windless night.

Attend dark-sky events in the fall or winter.
